Bottom Boards

The bottom board of a beehive is the base of the hive, and serves as a platform for which the other components of the hive rest on. Bottom boards provide an entrance for the honey bees that can easily be made smaller or closed entirely. This base also serves as a closer to the bottom of the hive to protect the honey bees, and the contents inside the hive from larger predators like mice, opossums, and shrews.

Bottom boards are often constructed entirely of wood and will provide many years of service when elevated off the ground. Alternatively, screened bottom boards have become a popular choice among beekeepers in areas where mites are an issue. Both styles provide their own unique advantages, and will serve their purpose when given proper care.
