Beekeeping Tips for Scorching Summers

As the mercury rises and the days lengthen, beekeepers face a new set of challenges. Hot weather isn’t just taxing on the bees; it’s also tough on the beekeeper. But fear not! With some smart strategies and the right gear, you can keep your colonies thriving even during the dog days of summer. Here are some tips for beekeeping in hot weather, featuring Dadant’s ventilated suits, jackets, and gloves designed to keep you cool while you tend to your buzzing workforce.

1. Early Morning Inspections

Beat the heat and the bees’ peak activity by inspecting your hives early in the morning. This not only minimizes stress on the bees but also allows you to work in cooler temperatures.

2. Provide Ample Water Sources

Bees need water to regulate the hive temperature. Ensure there are abundant water sources near the hives. Shallow dishes with pebbles or marbles for bees to land on will prevent drowning and encourage them to drink.

3. Shade Your Hives

Direct sunlight can overheat hives. If possible, position your hives in a location where they will be shaded during the hottest part of the day. Alternatively, consider a temporary shade cloth during heatwaves.

4. Ventilation is Key

Good airflow helps keep the hive cool. Ensure your hive’s ventilation is optimal by using screened bottom boards and upper entrances or spacers. Just be careful not to over-ventilate, which could allow robbers or pests inside.

5. Watch for Bearding

Bearding is when bees cluster outside the hive to cool off. While it’s a normal behavior, excessive bearding may indicate your hive is too hot and needs better ventilation.

6. Avoid Overcrowding

Overcrowded hives generate more heat. Regularly check your hives for space and add supers as needed. A spacious hive allows for better air circulation and less heat buildup.

7. Minimize Hive Checks

While inspections are vital, opening the hive too often can release the cool air that bees work hard to maintain. During extreme heat, limit hive checks to reduce thermal disruption.

8. Stay Hydrated

This one’s for you, beekeeper. Hydration is crucial. Keep water handy and take breaks as needed to avoid heat exhaustion.

9. Dress Appropriately with Dadant’s Gear

Wearing a full bee suit in the summer can be overwhelming. That’s where Dadant’s ventilated suits, jackets, and gloves come into play. Designed with a three-layer mesh material, our suits and jackets provide exceptional protection while allowing air to circulate, keeping you cooler as you work. The ventilated gloves offer added airflow around your hands, ensuring a secure yet cool and comfortable grip.

10. Use a Solar Wax Melter

Take advantage of the hot weather to clean up old combs and cappings. A solar wax melter is an efficient way to render wax using the sun’s heat.

Conclusion

Summer beekeeping can be a challenge, but with a little preparation and the right equipment, it can also be incredibly rewarding. Remember that your comfort is just as important as your bees’. With Dadant’s ventilated beekeeping suits, jackets, and gloves, you can keep your cool, even on the hottest days.
